It is about business but it is applicable to anything and everything.

What does everyone want in business?  I am sure every business person wants their business to thrive. He or she Looks forward to opportunities at every moment. Always thinking of making deals.  Agreed?

Do you want a good deal to happen? Then don’t make deals. Yes, I mean to say don’t try hard to make deals if you really want good deals. Best deal just happens because it is acceptable by others. All you have to do is just offer your best solution, service or product.

What should you worry about in business? 

++  If something has to happen, and it is happening – Need not worry

++  If something cannot give happiness, but that is not happening – Need not worry

++  If something has to happen, but not happening – You must worry

Without offering the best, if you expect deals to happen then you will have to get someone who is ready to accept your lower deal. But you should deal with someone who is smart and smart people don’t agree for lower deals

 

How do deals happen?

By making your customer fall-in-love with your services or products

Examples are iPhone, BMW, Benz, Old Onida TV (Owner’s pride and neighbor’s envy)

How will you make them fall-in-love?

++ To do that you have to fall-in-love with what you are doing.

++  You should love what you are doing? That is, do it with love….

Stop Using These 16 Terms to Describe Yourself

Picture this. You meet someone new. "What do you do?" she asks.
"I'm an architect," you say.
"Oh, really?" she answers. "Have you designed any buildings I've seen?"
"Possibly," you reply. "We did the new student center at the university..."
"Oh wow," she says. "That's a beautiful building..."
Without trying -- without blowing your own horn -- you've made a great impression.
Now picture this. You meet someone new. "What do you do?" he asks.
"I'm a passionate, innovative, dynamic provider of architectural services with a collaborative approach to creating and delivering outstanding world-class client and user experiences."
All righty then.
Do you describe yourself differently – on your website, promotional materials, or especially on social media – than you do in person? Do you use cheesy clichés and overblown superlatives and breathless adjectives?
Do you write things about yourself you would never have the nerve to actually say?
Here are some words that are great when other people use them to describe you – but you should never use to describe yourself:
1. "Innovative." Most companies claim to be innovative. Most people claim to be innovative. Most are, however, not. (I'm definitely not.) That's okay, because innovation isn't a requirement for success.
If you are innovative, don't say it. Prove it. Describe the products you've developed. Describe the processes you've modified.
Give us something real so your innovation is unspoken but evident... which is always the best kind of evident to be.
2. "World-class." Usain Bolt: world-class sprinter, Olympic medals to prove it. Lionel Messi: world-class soccer (I know, football) player, four Ballon d'Or trophies to prove it.
But what is a world-class professional or company? Who defines world-class? In your case, probably just you.
3. "Authority." Like Margaret Thatcher said, "Power is like being a lady; if you have to say you are, you aren't." Show your expertise instead.
"Presented at TEDxEast " or "Predicted 50 out of 50 states in 2012 election" (Hi Nate!) indicates a level of authority. Unless you can prove it, "social media marketing authority" might simply mean you spend way too much time worrying about your Klout score.
4. "Results oriented." Really? Some people actually focus on doing what they are paid to do? We had no idea.
5. "Global provider." The majority of businesses can sell goods or services worldwide; the ones that can't are fairly obvious.
Only use "global provider" if that capability is not assumed or obvious; otherwise you just sound like a small company trying to appear big.
6. "Motivated." Check out Chris Rock's response (not safe for work or the politically correct) to people who say they take care of their kids. Then substitute words like "motivated."
Never take credit for things you are supposed to do – or supposed to be.
7. "Creative." See particular words often enough and they no longer make an impact. "Creative" is one of them. (Use finding "creative" references in random LinkedIn profiles as a drinking game and everyone will lose -- or win, depending on your perspective.)
"Creative" is just one example. Others include extensive, effective, proven, influential, team player... some of those terms may truly describe you, but since they are also being used to describe everyone they've lost their impact.
8. "Dynamic." If you are "vigorously active and forceful," um, stay away.
9. "Guru." People who try to be clever for the sake of being clever are anything but. (Like in #8.) Don't be a self-proclaimed ninja, sage, connoisseur, guerilla, wonk, egghead... it's awesome when your customers affectionately describe you that way.
Refer to yourself that way and it's obvious you're trying way too hard to impress other people – or yourself.
10. "Curator." Museums have curators. Libraries have curators. Tweeting links to stuff you find interesting doesn't make you a curator... or an authority or a guru.
11. "Passionate." I know many people disagree, but if you say you're incredibly passionate about, oh, incorporating elegant design aesthetics into everyday objects, to me you sound over the top.
The same is true if you're passionate about developing long-term customer solutions. Try the words focus, concentration, or specialization instead.
Or try "love," as in, "I love incorporating an elegant design aesthetic in everyday objects." For whatever reason, that works for me. Passion doesn't. (But maybe that's just me.)
12. "Unique." Fingerprints are unique. Snowflakes are unique. You are unique – but your business probably isn't. That’s fine, because customers don't care about unique; they care about "better."
Show you're better than the competition and in the minds of your customers you will be unique.
13. "Incredibly..." Check out some random bios and you'll find plenty of further-modified descriptors: "Incredibly passionate," "profoundly insightful," "extremely captivating..." isn't it enough to be insightful or captivating? Do you have to be profoundly insightful?
If you must use over-the-top adjectives, spare us the further modification. Trust that we already get it.
14. "Serial entrepreneur." A few people start multiple, successful, long-term businesses. They are successful serial entrepreneurs.
The rest of us start one business that fails or does okay, try something else, try something else, and keep on rinsing and repeating until we find a formula that works. Those people are entrepreneurs. Be proud if you're "just" an entrepreneur. You should be.
15. "Strategist." I sometimes help manufacturing plants improve productivity and quality. There are strategies I use to identify areas for improvement but I'm in no way a strategist. Strategists look at the present, envision something new, and develop approaches to make their vision a reality.
I don't create something new; I apply my experience and a few proven methodologies to make improvements.
Very few people are strategists. Most "strategists" are actually coaches, specialists, or consultants who use what they know to help others. 99% of the time that's what customers need – they don't need or even want a strategist.
16. "Collaborative." You won't just decide what's right for me and force me to buy it?
If your process is designed to take my input and feedback, tell me how that works. Describe the process. Don't claim we'll work together -- describe how we'll work together.
That’s my list -- clearly subjective and definitely open to criticism.

We made the last minute decision of taking part in the MSME Defense Expo – 2012 (http://defcontractindia.com/About.html) and had very little time to get ready. We organized self explanatory posters and presentation on our products and solutions. Our marketing and sales rolled up their sleeves. That is it! Everything took place in lightening speed. The response from visitors is tremendous in the two days gone by. We are expecting more response tomorrow. We got good number of sincere visitors and serious enquiries too. I can recommend anyone to take part. The seminars conducted by Government provided great deal of future projects. The one-to-one meetings with public sector unit project heads are well organized. So we became satisfied participant.

Your WiFi Security is your responsibility

Secure Your WiFi Network – It is your responsibility

It is time to check on and secure our WiFi network. Important point is -- it is not that WiFi is unsafe; it is a question of right configuration. Wireless network (WiFi) is as safe as wired network.

Many have WiFi modem/access point at home or home office but the wireless unit is simply installed and attention not paid to the safety part of it.

What happens if basic security configuration not done:
Unauthorised laptops, smart phone or any handheld device can connect to the wireless network and access Internet. It can be missed and you become responsible as the Internet connection is on your name. The unauthorized system need not be in your premises. One can access your network from outside the premises where the wireless signals are available.

You can not stop the wireless signal spreading outside required area but you can make the wireless network secured.

Securing WiFi network:
To secure the WiFi network you have to do the following minimum configuration. If you do not know how to do it get help from WiFi/Wireless experts.

1. Disable SSID broadcast. An SSID is the name of a wireless local area network (WiFi or WLAN).
2. Change the default SSID
3. Change default administrator password (and user name)
4. Protect your WiFi network with password. By doing so, you will control the access of the network. Unknown people can not get in to your network.
a. Even if your WiFi network is offered for free, make it password protected and you can give the username password to the users for free and at least you will know the user. Keep entry of the users.
b. If you have reasons to give the password to co-workers, visitors, guests then keep changing the password frequently. So that you are aware of the users all the time.
5. You can adopt advanced security if required with the help of experts.

Do you drink?

Dear Friends,
I would like to share a small incident which touched me. I had gone for a small shopping with my 10 years old daughter. While returning we saw a crowded bar. She started asking about liquor and she also mentioned what she learnt at school that liquor is not good for health (injurious – familiar word?:-)). Then she mentioned that in a story she read, a lady goes to see her grandma with a cake and wine on her birthday. My daughter criticized “how bad! why is she taking wine...”. I explained to her in very cold places, people take one or two sips of wine to maintain the warmth of the body. Suddenly she asked me “you were in US, have you taken liquor?”. I am a dry person and my answer was no. She took my hand which she was holding and kissed my hand. She said “good dad!”. Wow! That was moment which I can’t describe; worth millions of certificates honoring my good conduct. I was proud.

Money value -- from the eye of a kid

There is no dispute in saying that the value of money is not valued by the current teen generation. This being the situation, imagine how will a 10 year old girl understand the value of money. I had a great experience in realizing that. We were returning from a small grocery shopping with my kids and nephew. On the way there was a high-end BMW car parked. Being teen age and fascinated by BMW boys, my son and nephew started discussing about the car. My daughter who also liked the car started a conversation with me.

See how the value of money is understood by kids.

My daughter who is 10 years:
“why are we not buying BMW?”.

Me: We don’t have that much money. Besides that we have a good car.

Daughter: How much would it cost?

Me: About Rs. 1 Crore (10 Million)

Daughter: What dad! Don’t you have even Rs. 1 Crore (10 Million)?

Me: No

Daughter: You say you have worked in USA and all but don’t you have Rs. 1 Crore?

(I have to justify or give a diplomatic answer )
Me: We bought a house right? So I have put good amount of money in that.

Daughter: Tell me how much money you have?

Me: I have Rs. 500 in my pocket

Daughter: No, I am asking you how much you have in the bank

Me: Why do you want to know that?

Daughter: Tell me that you have at least Rs. 1 Lakh (100,000) in the bank….

Me: Yes, I have that much and I have reserved for your educational expenses so that you can study whatever you want.

……… she paused momentarily………

Daughter: Good!

See how is taking the amount of Rs. 1 Crore so easily and climbing down to Rs. 1 Lakh. Amazing!

We need to put an effort to ensure that the kids understand the value of money.

Are You Trapped In A Fixed Mindset? Fix It!

In a rut in your life, or in your career? There's just one big simple thing you have to do to get out of it, says Carol Dweck, Stanford University psychologist: Switch from a fixed mindset to a growth one.
In her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, Dweck writes "For 20 years, my research has shown that the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life. It can determine whether you become the person you want to be and whether you accomplish the things you value. How does this happen? How can a simple belief have the power to transform your psychology and, as a result, your life?"
A person with a fixed mindset, she explains, believes we are all born with a certain set of skills and competencies. We either have a talent for something or we don't. It's all binary. You have artistic ability or not; you have language skills or not; you are a great natural leader or not. There is nothing in between, nor is there the possibility for serious personal development and growth. Why put a lot of effort into learning something you'll never be able to master anyway? Time and energy are better spent further honing your existing skills.
The dangers in thinking and behaving this way are as varied as they are predictable. It means success is all about showing how smart or talented you are. It's all about validating yourself. Something new is something to be avoided, as it may expose weakness. And the last thing you want to do is acknowledge and address a weakness. You'd rather pretend it doesn't exist. On those rare occasions where you are forced to confront one, you resort to the key weapons of the fixed mindset: blame, excuses and the stifling of critics and rivals.
Fortunately, Dweck says, not everyone thinks this way, and almost no one does all the time.
On the other end of the spectrum is the growth mindset. If you have a full-on growth mindset, anything and everything is possible. If there is something you have an interest in yet don't know how to do, you do whatever it takes to learn it. By stretching your comfort zone, you are able to continually develop yourself and define your own levels of success. With this mindset, even failure and criticism become opportunities to learn and grow.
Which mindset do you have? Read each of these two statements about intelligence and decide whether you mostly agree or disagree with it.
--My intelligence is something very basic about me that I can't change very much.
--I can always substantially change how intelligent I am.
Statement One is a fixed-mindset statement. Statement Two reflects the growth mindset. For intelligence you could substitute artistic talent, sports ability or leadership skill. Try it.
The good news is that even someone who has always looked at the world with a fixed mindset can change, Dweck says. Forbes recently asked her to explain the steps involved in shifting from a fixed mindset to a growth one. This was her written reply:
Begin by seeking evidence for the growth mindset in your life.
Think about an area where you once had little ability, but now you're pretty good at it. How did you make the change?
Think of someone you know who dramatically improved their performance. What did they do to make it happen?
Think about people who have done things you were sure they could never do. What does their experience tell you about our ability to develop ourselves?
Next, learn to recognize your fixed mindset when it takes over.
As you approach a challenge, your fixed mindset voice says, "Am I sure I can do it? Maybe I don't have the talent. Let's stay in our comfort zone and protect our dignity."
As you hit an obstacle, the voice says, "This would be easy if I really had talent; it's not too late to back out and save face."
As you face criticism, it quickly says, "It's not my fault."
Recognize that you have a choice.
How you treat challenges, setbacks and criticism is up to you. You can interpret them with a fixed mindset as signs that your talents are lacking, or you can interpret them with a growth mindset as signs that you need to ramp up your strategies and effort, stretch yourself and expand your abilities. You decide.
As you face challenges, setbacks and criticism, listen to that fixed mindset voice and talk back to it with a growth mindset voice.
When you approach a challenge:
The fixed mindset says, "Am I sure I can do it? Maybe I don't have the talent." The growth mindset answers, "I'm not sure I can do it now, but I know I can learn."
Fixed mindset: "I'll stay in my comfort zone and protect my dignity." Growth mindset: "If I don't try, I'll automatically fail. Where's the dignity in that?"
As you hit a setback:
Fixed mindset: "This would be a snap if I really had talent." Growth mindset: "That is so wrong. Basketball wasn't easy for Michael Jordan, and inventing wasn't easy for Thomas Edison. They had a passion, and they put in tons of effort."
As you face criticism:
Fixed mindset: "It's not my fault." Growth mindset: "If I don't take responsibility, I can't fix it. Let me listen, regardless of how painful it is, and learn whatever I can."
Put the growth mindset into action.
Which voice you listen to becomes pretty much your choice. You decide whether or not you're going to:
--take on a challenge wholeheartedly,
--learn from your setbacks and try again,
--hear the criticism and act on it.
Again, the choice is yours.
Practice hearing both voices, and practice listening to and acting on the growth mindset. See how things start to change.

The Struggle of Life

The one who does not know the struggle of life is either an immature soul, or a soul who has risen above the life of this world. The object of a human being in this world is to attain to the perfection of humanity, and therefore it is necessary that man should go through what we call the struggle of life.

The reason for life’s battle is often very small when it is looked at in the light of wisdom. This shows that the knowledge of life does not always come by battling. It comes by throwing light upon it. He is not a warrior who becomes impatient immediately, who loses his temper suddenly, who has no control over his impulses, who is ready to give up hope and courage. The true warrior is he who can endure, who has a great capacity for tolerance, who has depth enough in his heart to assimilate all things, whose mind reaches far enough to understand all things, whose very desire is to understand others and to help them understand.

Never expect that the events of life are favourable all through. You will have to make a continual struggle and fight with others, whether you like it or not, whether you love them or not. You will find that this fight must be encountered on every side. So you must face it patiently. Do not turn your back to it. Face the conflict with courage and bravery and tranquility. Since you know that you are on the path of truth you can go on trustfully. Although there is a great responsibility in this worldly life, it is through this responsibility that you are enabled to evolve spiritually. In fact your evolution will become much greater even than that of the saints who have renounced the world. The reason for this is that, when you pursue your life’s journey steadily and with tranquility through all the struggles and conflicts you have to undergo, success will surely come in time. This success will perhaps enable you in your turn to bring great success to the lives of many other souls too.

Reunion - a fascinating learning

Hi all,

We, engineering gradtuates of CIT (Coimbatore Insititute of Technology), Coimbatore had a reunion at our college it self. It was an grand event.

I would like to mention something different. It was a different experience no where you will get and no one can offer you. It gives a different learning in life… No one can fast forward our life and show things… but reunion helped us rewinding our thoughts with visual effects that provided self-feedback. It taught us to give importance to the right things in life. The importance that we gave to few things during our college days is immaterial today. For example, I am sure if we had met 5 or 10 years after college, our conversation would have been about salary, purchase of house, etc. But in the reunion no one discussed about it. Most of the discussion was surrounding the family and about the kids.

The decisions we made changed us at different point in time. The reunion in a way helped us understand how each step with dedication and confidence helped. There is nothing right or wrong in the decisions we had taken but as long as you do it dedicatedly and sincerely you will be a grand success.

I can give some of the examples from my own observations.

I used to think that talented persons like MP Ganesan are stuck in PSUs like NLC. But talking to him a bit suggested to me that he is doing amazing things there. They are using latest technology to take the thermal energy out without evacuating the local people. I am glad about his decision of joining NLC; and our NLC got a talented engineer. He is paying back to our country. Similarly many of CITians are with Government organizations doing more than a job. Namasivayam is the one who is brain behind running Kadamparai power plant running smoothly. Stalin is in vigilance identifying the faulty man machines. All of us know our rocket Dhan’s contributions in Indian Government’s ambitious plans. Visiting a country with a Diplomatic Visa, I consider a feather in the cap. We can list of many such achivers.....

Personally I was glad when current principal of CIT emphasized that they are happy to see 17% of CIT84 are entrepreneur as I am one of them.

Reunion - a fascinating learning. It was worth a time and money spent. Don’t miss next time.

Let us look for ways to paying back to our society.

Sibling support for our kids in the future….

Sibling support for our kids in the future….

In the past generation, there were several children in a family. The number of children in a family was close to 10 about 70 years ago. Slowly it reduced to 4 or 5 children 40 years ago. Today we normally see couple have one or two per family and rarely three children. It may be due to several good reasons. But think of the sibling support that we get. Our brothers and sisters do not think twice to come to our rescue in case we need them. The coming generation may not have that kind of support from siblings.

What do we do?

One easy and good way to overcome this is to have our children considering the cousins as close family members. To make it happen

o We should take every opportunity to meet and spend time together
o We can have parties with our cousins as we do with out friends/colleagues that will bring the next generation closure
o Let them mix well and get comfortable with each other
o We should also instill the bonding in their mind
o We can also make the older kids realize that they consider themselves responsible for their younger cousins.

It is not difficult to do so. We require little more communication and get-together with our cousins. More importantly, we should remove the notion of “relatives means problems….”. As you all agree, days are gone where we keep complaining about our relatives with ego. We already have very friendly relationship with each other why not we give the same feelings to our kids about their cousins.

A casual discussion with a financial advisor made us realize how much we ignore on our own asset details. If it is not documented and given to the right person, it is as good as lost, when we are not around.

 

“Jeevan ke saath bhi; jeevan ke baad bhi (While you live and after you live)” – well said. It is a Life Insurance Corporation’s slogan. But makes us think. It is a good idea to list out all the information on the asset and leave a copy with trustworthy persons. We are not talking about the will/estate planning. That is different. Don’t tell me, my wife/husband knows everything. We travel together most of the time. If both of us are not there, no one will know what we havehave and where.

 

With the information compiled and kept in the hands of others, in case of any unexpected event we will at least know, oops! they will at least know where and what is available. 1. Most of the credit cards provide life insurance. Get the details on them and document. Attach the claim form and procedure. Why not?

1. If your bank account is not a joint account, make them a joint account immediately. Without that we have to go through the procedure before getting access to that.

LONDON: The London Stock Exchange PLC has halted electronic trading because of technical issues.

The LSE says the break to trading on Thursday is due to connectivity issues, but it hasn't yet determined the root cause of the problem.

The exchange has placed all order-driven securities in to an auction call period, which allows customers to continue to place orders into the exchange's order book. The exchange says it will give customers 30 minutes notice before ending the auction period, once it sorts out the technical issue.
Trading went offline at 10.33 GMT, freezing the FTSE 100 at 5,264.97.
The auction call period is usually used to set prices at the start and end of the daily trading session.

Solar Centric

We are under utilizing solar power. It is high time our Governments encourage solar powered products and services. VCs should reach out to the startups that are inclined towards the solar based products. That is one way of giving back to society. It would help cleaning the guilty feeling that everyone is carrying :-).

Japan is doing the right thing in a big way. They are planning to position a solar station in space and bring the solar power to earth using laser beams. That would be about 6 times cheaper than the current cost. We wish them good luck on the project which will contribute to the good climate and will help every living thing.

Campus Wireless Network

Introduction

It is not just a trend any more to have wireless network in an entire campus but also a productive tool that every campus would like to have for easy access of information from any part of the campus. The campus wireless provides the mobility and accessibility to the information. The campus wireless got propelled by the security assurance and affordability. The user community is convinced that wireless network has the wired network equivalent security.

Typical requirement of Campus wireless

This can be generally categorized as:

1. Building to building wireless connectivity

This point to point connectivity would help getting Internet bandwidth for your complex and if needed other neighboring complex too.
2. The point to point wireless connectivity is done using the following.

i. Keeping wireless units and antenna on the top of the building at both the ends

ii. Using Government de-licensed frequency (means Government has permitted anyone to use it freely) equipment

iii. Bring the line of sight (which is a must) by keeping a pole or as mast at both ends, if required.

For multi-storied blocks, place the units outside the building and provide coverage. The wireless units are kept on a pole surrounding the buildings.

In case if out door installation is not desired, wireless Internet can be provided using indoor installations; ceiling mounting or wall mounting.
